Automated External Defibrillation - AED

Course Outcome:
This module will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to understand the safety requirements when handling an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), as well as the skills to use an AED within the first minutes after a cardiac arrest

Entry Requirements:

Nil

However it is recommended that participants have literacy competencies equivalent to Level 2 as described in the Certificates of General Education for Adults (2112AFL, 2212AKC, 2212ALC)

Please complete the enrolment form and hand it to the trainer at the commencement of the course or by using the Online Enrolment form.

Nominal Duration:

4 hours

Qualification:

  • It is important that you attend each session of this course so that you are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
  • Your certificate has been accredited by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority, it's nationally recognised and entered on the National Training Information Service.
  • Your certificate will be valid for 1 year. If you are unable to attend any sessions, please contact your instructor.
  • When attending a class, please bring - This workbook; Your First Aid manual; Writing paper/pens or pencils.

 

Competencies to be achieved during the training:

At the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1.
Explain why Early Defibrillation & the 'Chain of Survival' are essential and explain the Structure & Function of the Heart
2.Manage a cardiac arrest using an Automatic External Defibrillator - (AED)
(A full copy of the course curriculum will be made available upon request)

Assessment Procedure:

You will be assessed at the end of the course to show your instructor that you have an appropriate understanding of the procedures necessary to manage a life-threatening situation.

This will consist of:

  • Theory Assessment paper
  • Resuscitation demonstration using an AED

You must show competence in each section to qualify for a certificate.

 

Facilities & Equipment:

Each participant will be provided with all of the intellectual materials required to study all modules. Each program will also be supported with adequate Teaching Aids to assist with the theory and practical training modules such as CPR manikins, Bandages, Visual Aids, Handouts etc as appropriate.

Course Content

Primary First Aid Management

 

 

1.Define Early Defibrillation in the Community & the Chain of Survival

 

- Why early defibrillation of a patient is vitally important
- The statistical chances of survival for each minutes delay after a patient suffers a Ventricular Fibrillation (V.F.) cardiac arrest
- The current average survival rate of patient's who suffer a V.F. cardiac arrest prior to the arrival of an Ambulance
- The '4' key areas within the 'Chain of Survival'
- Why the awareness of, and adherence to the 'Chain of Survival' is vitally important in the process of saving lives within the community

2. Describe Heart Structure & Function

 

- The anatomical position of the heart
- The function of the heart's conduction system

3. Define why early Defibrillation saves lives

 

- Why Defibrillation can save the lives of patient's in Ventricular Fibrillation (V.F.) & Ventricular Tachycardia (VT)
- The advantages of AED's
- Function of defibrillation in saving cardiac arrest patients

4. Demonstrate the safety procedure that must be undertaken before using an AED

 

- The three (3) criteria required before considering Defibrillation
- Safety procedures to undertake when using an AED
- The two cardiac (heart) rhythm groups that Automatic External Defibrillators identify

5. Demonstrate the safe use of an 'Automatic External Defibrillator' - (AED)

 

- The basic functions of AED's
- Procedures to be undertaken if the AED fails to respond
- Demonstrate the safe and efficient use of an AED
