CARIBBEAN MEDICAL DEPLOYMENTS
Medical Rescue has  been called upon to deploy Australian Doctors and Nurses to assist American teams providing COVID/ICU support in the Dutch Caribbean including:

  • Aruba,
  • Sint Maarten,
  • Curacao

As such we are now seeking expressions of interest from experienced Intensive Care Doctors (FCICM) and registered nurses with ICU experience. Deployments are for a minimum of two months but can be longer or extended once there.

  • High Remuneration paid to you in Australia
  • Hotel Accommodation provided (including hotel meals)
  • Return flights from Australia (booked before departure)
  • Approval to practice on your Australian or NZ Registration

please note at this time we are only seeking ICU experienced doctors and nurses. there are no positions currently available for ED nurses or Paramedics however should this change positions will be advertised separately.

JOB DESCRIPTION-  ICU DOCTOR  Aruba/St Maarten/Curacao

Reports to: Team Lead and Chief Medical Officer

Job Summary:

The ICU Physician will provide special care for critically ill and complex type of patients.

Remuneration

$300 AUD per hour, plus Accommodation and return flights included

Duties/Responsibilities

Physicians (Intensivists) need to hold Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM ) with recent ICU experience. This includes being very comfortable with endotracheal intubation and placement of central lines and arterial lines without hesitation. Intensivist are responsible for securing airways not only in the ICU but also on the ward and in the emergency department at all hours.

“Physicians can be pulmonary-Critical Care, Anesthesia – Critical Care, Surgical-Critical Care, or ER-critical care. Physicians may be called upon to utilize their expertise in other fields outside of the intensive care unit. For instance, surgeon – intensivists may be called upon that to use their expertise in the operating theater to assist with complex surgical patients”.

Most importantly doctor’s a humble attitude when working with a different medical system where ones Australian training may be misunderstood.

All in all, the physicians, specialists and the nursing staff are extremely gracious and easy to work with, but a willingness to integrate into a Dutch medical system and society is a requirement. While all other providers including nurses and specialists speak English, the primary language is Dutch and medical documentation by other specialists is conducted in Dutch. Most providers speak Spanish and Papiamento as well and patients generally speak one or two of these four languages. Documentation by Intensivists, including the Intensivists who live on the island, is done in English when American / Australians  are present

Application Requirements

  • CV – Current ICU experience (3-5 years)
  • Evidence of AHPRA registration showing fellowship (FCICM)
  • Updated immunization record to include TB and Hep B (prior to deployment)
  • Passport (prior to deployment)

General Duties

  • Maintain hospital standards while providing care to patients with COVID-19 and those exposed to COVID-19
  • Follow all infectious disease protocols and maintain the standards set by the current team onsite.
  • Central line placement, arterial line placement, and intubations
  • Manage a variety of equipment and patient treatments including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes, intravenous fluids, titration of critical medications, and blood transfusions
  • Report in/out to other Doctors on all patients.
  • Round individually on all patients
  • Interact with nurses regarding condition overnight, review medication, intake/output, vitals etc. and provide guidance for ongoing management
  • Daily rounds with multidisciplinary team – includes microbiologist, pharmacist pulmonologist, surgeons, and Internal medicine colleagues – discuss plan for each patient
  • Write daily notes with instructions / orders for nurses to follow for each patient based on management plan decided by intensivist on for the day. The unit is a closed unit
  • Travel to a ward, the CCU or the ED to evaluate a patient for whose management we have been asked for guidance or whom we have been asked to admit to the unit.

The job duties are flexible and subject to change dependent upon operational needs.

JOB DESCRIPTION –  ICU RN  Aruba/St Maarten/Curacao

Job Summary:

The ICU Nurse will provide whole bedside care of the patient and will assist physicians with bedside surgical procedures while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

Duties/Responsibilities

ICU Registered Nurses (ICU RN) need to hold full unrestricted registration with AHPRA and have  recent ICU experience.

Most importantly ICU RN’s require a humble attitude when working with a different medical system where ones Australian training may be misunderstood.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Comfortable working in COVID hot zone
  • Provide “endorsements” (bedside report) at the nurses’ station
  • Provide interventions for hemodynamic instability, seizure activity, kidney failure, internal bleeding
  • Assist physicians with bedside invasive practices such as central line placement, arterial line placement, and intubations
  • Manage a variety of equipment and patient treatments including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes, intravenous fluids, titration of critical medications, and blood transfusions
  • Provide education regarding patient’s care and emotional support to families

  • Have basic knowledge in the following:
    • Service a minimum of two (2) patients daily with a variety of diagnoses such as stroke, GI bleeding, respiratory distress, cancer, trauma from motor vehicle accidents etc.
    • Assist with computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging to determine and implement effective plan of care for patients
    • EKG Interpretation
    • Serial Blood Draws
    • Nasogastric Tube Insertion
    • Foley Insertion
    • Ostomy Care
    • Chest Tube Maintenance
    • Parenteral Nutrition
    • Bladder Scanning
    • Education and Experience:

Must be willing to work varying morning, midday and overnight shifts
