Director

Dr Glenn McKay

MBChB, BSc, DipGrad, PGCertAME, PGDipAeroRT

Glenn graduated from The University of Otago Medical School in 2002 and has worked as a flight doctor with multiple rotary and fixed wing aeromedical organisations and in pre-hospital environments for the military, RFDS, ski patrols, offshore oil & gas sector, and with disaster response teams. He is a commissioned Medical Officer with the Australian Defence Force and presently fills clinical roles in international assistance, aeromedical retrieval, and pre hospital medicine. Dr McKay taught as an Assistant Professor on the teaching faculty for post graduate degrees in Retrieval Medicine at Bond University and completed his postgraduate training in aeromedical retrieval and transport through The University of Otago School of Aviation Medicine.

Director

Michael Smith

BHSc, ADip Paramedical Science

Michael has been practising pre-hospital medicine for over 20 years and has been an Intensive Care Paramedic for the past 16 years with State-based ambulance service in Australia. He has worked with both State Government and Private pre-hospital ambulance services. He has experience with both rotary and fixed wing aircraft and has a strong focus on and experience in evaluation safety systems that allow for the safe delivery of care to patients. He has provided input to several major departmental enquiries that have implemented safety systems for pre-hospital clinicians.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Health Science through Victoria University and an Advanced Diploma in Paramedical Science. He also holds qualifications in front line management of ambulance clinicians and has been involved with the development of university curriculum programs for the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic)

Michael currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Medical Rescue Foundation and chaired the operations team that lead the Disaster Response teams to the Philippines Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 where the disaster response teams treated in excess of 3000 patients in a 30-day period. Michael continued this role when the foundation deployed teams post devastating floods in the Solomon Islands in 2014.

Michael has been actively involved with development of clinical governance mechanisms to maintain and expand the scope of practice of paramedics in the pre-hospital environment. Michael currently sits on the Board of Directors with the Australian & New Zealand College of Paramedicine and is also the company treasurer. Michael is currently providing direct input to the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council in relation to the submission for Paramedics to be included on the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency as a registered profession.

Eddie Bennet

GradCertEM, BM, JP

Eddie has been engaged in Emergency Services, Disaster Operations and Helicopter Rescue for over 30 years with extensive practical experience in operations and the delivery of training and assessment for these areas.

Working with and across all levels of government, non-government, corporate and volunteer organisations in emergent and non-emergent environments, Eddie has developed sound skills in leadership, management, operations coordination, training, planning, response, evacuation and recovery.

Eddie holds a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management as well as Diplomas in SAR, WH&S, Public Safety, Security and Risk Management, Government Investigations as well as Fraud Control. Eddie has also received the ILS Citation of Merit, as well as the Australian Bravery Medal, the Australian National Sea Safety Award, National Emergency Response Medal, National Meritorious Service Medal, National Police Service Medal and more.

Director Aviation – Air Ambulance

Michael Cooke

As a now 4th generation pilot, Michael Cooke, was destined to be born with jet fuel in his blood. In 1915, Michael’s Great Grandfather Lionel Cooke was the 11th person ever issued with a pilot’s license in Australia and made a career from instructing young pilots to fly the Bristol Boxkite. Lionel’s son Rolla Cooke, flew in World War II as a Spitfire Fighter pilot.

The flying gene was then passed onto Rolla’s son, Dr David Cooke. A flying Doctor with over 50 years of flying experience to date, and showing no sign of stepping away from the controls anytime soon, the passion for aviation has always been strong in Australia’s oldest flying family. David’s sons Michael and Anthony, are both also pilots.

It was after working as a commercial pilot for only 6 months, and at a mere age of just 21, that Michael decided he could do things differently, and started an air charter business. Founded by David and Michael Cooke in 2001, they commenced operations in NSW, under the name Coastwings Australia. The business relocated to Brisbane and was rebranded as Avcair, under the management of Michael Cooke in 2005. In 2019 Avcair and Medical Rescue entered into a joint venture to form Medical Rescue Air Ambulance. Michael is the Director of Aviation for the business and oversees all aviation operations.

Chief Executive Officer

Veronica Jones

BBus, MMarkMgt

Veronica’s operations management, strategic marketing and HR/recruitment expertise spans over 15 years. An affinity with the medical sector began early in her career, when she was appointed as Marketing Manager of Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney. Following her tenure in Sydney, Veronica moved to Queensland and founded two separate businesses within the HR and training sectors. Under her executive direction, they grew to become successful service providers at a national level, proving her commercial acumen and capability in the areas of financial management, operations development and organisational expansion.

In the first of these businesses, Veronica worked alongside Medical Rescue, forming a strategic alliance to recruit medical personnel in support of the Australian Defence Force throughout Australia and overseas. In more recent times, she has bolstered her commercial operations and management acumen with an in-depth knowledge of the Australian health sector, through her recruitment and career mentorship of a range of public and private sector, medical and allied health professionals.

As CEO, Veronica exercises her ability to identify and develop new strategic relationships, expanding the organisation’s reach and influence, both at a national and international level. She is particularly passionate about building and leveraging an organisation’s employer brand to attract and retain top talent, and believes a company’s reputation, success and long-term profitability depend on the nurturing of its human capital, which she regards as its greatest asset.

Medical Director

Dr Mark Shirran

MB BS BMedSci(Hons) DipIMC RCS (Ed), FACEM

Mark graduated in medicine from the University of London in 2001. He moved to Australia in 2004 and has since completed his advanced training in emergency medicine. He works full-time as a Staff Specialist Emergency Physician at the Gold Coast University Hospital ED. Mark has a specialist interest in pre-hospital/retrieval medicine and has worked in various  operations on fixed and rotary platforms, both domestically and in the UK, including London’s Air Ambulance HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service), Essex & Herts HEMS, CareFlight Qld and RFDS. He has also completed a pre-hospital fellowship with Queensland Ambulance Service and continues to work part-time for them as a Senior Ambulance Medical Officer, with regular shifts on the Brisbane Trauma Response Team.

Anne-Marie Ransby

Anne-Marie is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand.  She earned her Bachelor of Business Studies, majoring in Accountancy, at Massey University in New Zealand.

Anne-Marie has 24 years of extensive experience and is a dedicated member of our leadership team.  Anne-Marie brings a wealth of business experience in financial and management accounting, tax planning and strategic direction, with a strong drive for capitalising on business opportunities.

Training Manager

Damian Marks

BCCJ

Damian is the senior driver and specialised equipment training consultant within the MRT business unit. He was previously a senior training facilitator and sergeant with the Queensland Police Service for over 15 years. He has been developing, leading and facilitating emergency services and external training courses for over 20 years. He has extensive training experience in a vast range of machinery having led large projects with the Defence Force, emergency services and numerous organisations both in Australia and abroad. He has project managed a large transport and logistics company so has diverse skills in running and operating all ranges of equipment. Damian also has extensive operational experience at the highest level where he was chosen as the personal security / motorcade driver for a number of high-level dignitaries such as Australian Prime Ministers Rudd / Howard and U.S. Ambassador McCallum.

Damian has a degree in criminology, and Advanced Diploma in Witness Protection, Advanced Diploma in Dignitary Protection, Advanced Diploma in Public Safety and Policing, Cert IV in Police Driving Instruction and numerous VET training and workplace qualifications.
